In short

A few apps really cost a barber $0 a month. Square Appointments Free, Setmore Free and theCut Free all take bookings with no subscription, but each caps something: no-show fees start on Square Plus, Setmore and theCut keep text reminders for paid tiers, and card fees still apply when clients pay.

Search for a free barber booking app and the results mix two different products: apps that are free for clients to book with, and apps that are free for the barber to run a book on. This guide sorts them, shows what each $0 plan leaves out, and works out what free costs once clients start paying by card. If you are choosing for a whole shop and want to see how Twizzlo sets one up, our barbershop booking software page covers it.

How we built it: we read each vendor's own pricing page, in its US version where one exists, on October 2, 2026, and quote US dollars before tax unless a line says otherwise. In the words of our editorial policy, "We read prices from the vendor's own pricing page or help documentation, not from other review sites," and "Unknown is not no": where a page does not list a feature, we say so instead of assuming it is missing. We did not test these apps hands-on. Twizzlo, which publishes this guide, sells booking software, so its plans sit in their own section below.

Free for the barber, free for the client, or only a free trial?

Three different offers hide behind the word free. Some apps charge the barber nothing, some charge clients nothing but bill the barber, and some are free only for a trial. Table 1 sorts the apps that surfaced for this search, directly or inside the top roundup, on the day we checked.

App Who pays nothing What the barber pays Free trial
Square Appointments The barber and clients Square Free: $0 a month per location; Plus $49 and Premium $149 a month per location 30 days on Plus and Premium
Setmore The barber (up to 4 users) and clients Free: $0; Pro: $12 per user a month billed monthly, $5 billed annually Not stated
theCut The barber and clients Free: $0 a month; PRO: $25 a month; Shop plan for owners: $0 30 days of PRO, no credit card
Koalendar One user and clients Free forever; paid plans add payments and reminders 7 days on paid plans
MyBarb A solo barber and clients $0 for one barber; from €9.90 a month for a shop with up to 3 barbers (euros) Not stated
Booksy Clients only $29.99 a month plus tax; $20 a month per extra user 14 days, no credit card
Ring My Barber Clients only $9.99 a month 7 days
GlossGenius No free plan Standard: $28 a month billed monthly, $24 billed annually 14 days, no credit card
Fresha No free plan listed for the business Paid Independent and Team plans; US price not readable from our location Listed on the Canadian page

Table 1. Read on each vendor's own page on October 2, 2026. US dollars before tax and monthly billing unless stated; MyBarb prints euros. Free for clients means clients pay nothing to book, while the barber may still pay a subscription.

The first result in our main search sample repeats the mix-up. Zenoti's blog roundup of barber apps, dated April 22, 2026, still names Fresha the "best free barber booking app" and says Square Appointments is free "for one barber." On the vendors' own pages on October 2, 2026, Fresha lists paid Independent and Team plans, and Square Free includes unlimited staff calendars, so a whole shop can run on it with no subscription. theCut's client app is free for people booking a cut, and theCut also has a $0 plan for barbers, which is why it appears on both sides of the search.

What each free barber booking app plan includes, and what it caps

Four apps priced in US dollars give the barber a $0 plan that takes real bookings. Figure 1 and Table 2 line them up on the jobs that matter at the chair: team size, reminders, getting paid ahead, no-show protection, card payments and fees on new clients.

Grid comparing four $0 barber booking plans read October 2, 2026. Square Appointments Free: unlimited staff calendars, text and email reminders, prepayments and deposits, no-show fees only on Plus, 3.3% plus 30 cents online. Setmore Free: up to 4 users, one email reminder, deposits and texts on Pro. theCut Free: push and email updates, no-show policies, 2.75% card rate, $10 per Client Discovery client. Koalendar Free: one user, payments and reminders on paid plans.
Figure 1. What each $0 barber booking plan includes and what it leaves for a paid tier, from each vendor's pricing page read October 2, 2026 (US dollars). "Not listed" means the page does not list it, not that the app lacks it. The same facts are in Table 2.

Table 2. Free plans compared from each vendor's pricing page, read October 2, 2026; theCut's card hold is from its mobile pay page. "Not listed" and "None printed" describe the page, not the product.

Read across, each $0 plan gives up something different. Square Free is the fullest for a shop, with unlimited calendars, text reminders and deposits, but cancellation and no-show fees, and a waitlist, start on Plus at $49 a month per location. Setmore Free covers up to four users but sends one email reminder per booking and keeps texts and deposits for Pro. theCut Free suits a barber who runs the book from theCut's app, with no-show policies built in, but charges $10 for each client its discovery feature sends. Koalendar is a general scheduler: its free plan books one person's time and adds payments and reminders only on paid plans.

One more barber app surfaced in our search: MyBarb, which is free forever for a solo barber, takes no cut of each booking and prepares WhatsApp confirmations and reminders you send with one tap. It prices staff plans in euros, from €9.90 a month for up to three barbers, and is built for barbers in Europe.

What a free plan costs once clients pay by card

A $0 subscription is not a $0 bill once clients pay through the app. The card rate becomes the price of the plan, and it differs by app and by tier. Table 3 works one example: a solo barber charging a hypothetical $40 cut, with every booking paid by card through the app, at 80, 150 and 300 bookings a month.

Plan Subscription Card rate used 80 bookings 150 bookings 300 bookings
theCut Free $0 2.75% $88.00 $165.00 $330.00
GlossGenius Standard $28 flat 2.6% $111.20 $184.00 $340.00
theCut PRO $25 2.75% $113.00 $190.00 $355.00
Booksy $29.99 plus tax 2.69% + 30 cents (mobile and keyed) $140.07 $236.39 $442.79
Square Appointments Free $0 3.3% + 30 cents (online) $129.60 $243.00 $486.00
Square Appointments Plus $49 per location 2.9% + 30 cents (online) $165.80 $268.00 $487.00

Table 3. Monthly subscription plus card fees, rates and prices read on each vendor's pricing page on October 2, 2026. Worked example with a hypothetical $40 cut; before sales tax; excludes fees on new clients. Setmore and Koalendar are not shown because Setmore leaves the card rate to Square, Stripe or PayPal and Koalendar's free plan takes no payments.

Three-panel horizontal bar chart of one solo barber's monthly cost at 80, 150 and 300 bookings when every $40 cut is paid by card through the app. At 150 bookings: theCut Free $165.00, GlossGenius Standard $184.00, theCut PRO $190.00, Booksy $236.39, Square Free $243.00 and Square Plus $268.00.
Figure 2. Worked example, not a measured average: subscription plus card fees for a solo barber charging a hypothetical $40 cut, every booking paid by card through the app, at each vendor's published rate read October 2, 2026. Square uses its online rate. Before tax; excludes new-client fees. Figures are in Table 3.

Three results stand out. At 150 bookings Booksy, which is not free, costs $236.39 against Square Free's $243.00, because Booksy's rate for mobile and keyed-in payments is lower than Square Free's online rate; the two cross at about 123 bookings a month. At 300 bookings Square Plus costs $487.00, a dollar more than Square Free, so the paid tier still does not pay for itself on fees. And theCut Free is the lowest in this example at every volume, before any Client Discovery fees. For Booksy and Square priced side by side by chair count, see our Booksy vs Square comparison.

Two caveats can change the answer. If you charge Square clients in person rather than online, Square Free's rate is 2.6% plus 15 cents, or $1.19 on a $40 cut and $178.50 at 150 cuts. And cash costs nothing in card fees on any of these apps.

When does it pay to leave the free plan?

Square Appointments: Free or Plus

Plus costs $49 a month per location and lowers the online rate from 3.3% to 2.9%, with the same 30-cent fixed fee. That 0.4-percentage-point gap covers the $49 only above $12,250 of online card payments a month, about 306 cuts at $40. For in-person payments the gap is 0.1 percentage point (2.6% against 2.5%, both plus 15 cents), so Plus would need $49,000 a month in card sales to pay for itself on rates alone. Move to Plus for what it adds, such as cancellation and no-show fees and a waitlist, not to save on card fees. Plan-by-plan detail: Square Appointments pricing.

theCut: Free or PRO

PRO costs $25 a month and includes Client Discovery, which costs $10 per client on Free. From the third discovered client in a month, PRO costs less ($30 in fees against $25), and it adds text appointment updates to push and email. A barber whose clients all come from their own link can stay on Free.

Setmore: Free or Pro

Pro costs $12 per user a month billed monthly, or $5 billed annually. It adds SMS reminders, with 500 SMS credits a month for each Pro team member, plus deposits and a second reminder per booking. A four-barber shop pays $48 a month on monthly billing or $20 a month on annual billing. Plan-by-plan detail: Setmore pricing.

Apps that are free for clients, not for the barber

Several apps named in the results for this search, directly or inside the roundups, cost nothing for the person booking a cut and bill the barber. Read on October 2, 2026:

  • Booksy: $29.99 a month plus tax after a 14-day trial with no credit card, and $20 a month for each extra user. Its customer app is free for clients. Boost, an optional marketplace program, takes 30% of a Boost client's first visit, up to $100, or $12.00 on a $40 cut. Plan detail: Booksy pricing.
  • Ring My Barber: $9.99 a month after a seven-day trial; the app is free for clients.
  • GlossGenius: no free plan. Standard costs $28 a month billed monthly, or $24 billed annually, after a 14-day trial with no credit card, and card payments carry a flat 2.6%. Plan detail: GlossGenius pricing.
  • Fresha: lists paid Independent and Team plans and a one-time fee on brand-new clients who find you through its marketplace. Its pricing page showed only Canadian prices to our reader, so we print no US figure; check the US price on Fresha's site before you sign up.

Where Twizzlo fits a barber who wants to start free

Twizzlo is our product, so here it is on the same terms as the apps above. It has two plans, Free and Business Pro. Both include unlimited staff and locations, and on either plan online payments carry your Stripe processing rate plus a 1.5% Twizzlo platform fee. When a client skips a prepaid booking, whether to keep or refund the money is your call. Support is available 24/7 at support@twizzlo.com. The full feature list is on Twizzlo's features page, and plan limits are on Twizzlo's pricing page.

Twizzlo Free

Twizzlo Free is $0 a month for up to 150 bookings, with no SMS, and it is free forever, not a trial. Confirmations and reminders go by email. Clients book from a 24/7 booking page, each barber gets a calendar, walk-ins go on the same calendar as booked cuts, and you can take prepaid bookings at the full service price, with tips, through Stripe.

Twizzlo Business Pro

Business Pro is $29.99 a month per business for unlimited bookings, with 50 SMS a month included and $0.03 for each one after that. It includes every Twizzlo feature with no paid add-ons, among them a no-show fee setting you control. Business Pro comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

What Twizzlo costs in the same example

Bookings a month Plan Subscription 1.5% platform fee on $40 cuts paid online SMS after the 50 included (one text per booking) Total before Stripe processing
80 Free $0 $48.00 None (email reminders) $48.00
150 Free (at the cap) $0 $90.00 None (email reminders) $90.00
300 Business Pro $29.99 $180.00 $7.50 (250 texts) $217.49

Table 4. Twizzlo plan prices and the 1.5% platform fee from Twizzlo's pricing page, read October 2, 2026, applied to the same hypothetical $40 cut. Stripe sets its own processing rate, which is added on top and not included here.

Add your Stripe processing rate to these totals before you set them beside Table 3, because the 1.5% is charged on top of Stripe's rate. Past 150 bookings a month the Free plan no longer covers you, and text reminders need Business Pro at any volume, so you can start on the Free plan and move to Business Pro when you need either.

Where Twizzlo does not fit

If you want an app to send you new clients, Twizzlo's features page does not list a client marketplace, so bookings come from the link you share on Instagram, Google or your website. If you need text reminders on a $0 plan, Twizzlo Free sends email only. And if most clients prepay online, the platform fee in Table 4 grows with every booking.

How to test a free barber app before clients see it

  1. Enter your real service menu with true lengths: a fade, a beard trim, a cut and shave.
  2. Add every barber who takes bookings, and check the plan's user limit before you invite them.
  3. Book yourself as a client from your phone, through the link you will put in your Instagram bio, and time how long it takes.
  4. Pay for that test booking by card, then find the fee in the payout report and compare it with the rate in Table 2.
  5. Cancel inside your cancellation window and see whether the plan lets you charge the fee your policy promises. If you are writing a policy for the first time, see how to set a no-show charge.
  6. Check which reminder actually arrives, text or email, and how long before the appointment.
  7. Put one Saturday's walk-ins on the calendar and see whether they fit beside the booked cuts.

If a free plan fails a step that matters to your shop, the break-evens above show what the fix costs. For a ranked view of eight barber apps, paid ones included, see our pick of the best booking app for barbers.

Method: prices and plan limits were read on each vendor's own pricing or product page on October 2, 2026, in US dollars before tax unless marked; MyBarb prints euros and Fresha showed only Canadian prices, so no Fresha figure is used. Table 3 and Figure 2 are a worked example with a hypothetical $40 cut; the arithmetic multiplies each published rate by the cut price and adds the published fixed fee and monthly subscription.
